Health Benefits of Water Polo

The health benefits of water polo are plentiful. Water polo combines parts of basketball, hockey, rugby and soccer all together into one game, making it a demanding and physically active sport. Since it is played in a pool, players need good swimming skills in addition to all the other kinds of fitness the sport includes.

Keep your muscles strong
One benefit is that water polo helps build both endurance and strength. Players increase their endurance because they swim roughly 4 miles during one game. The continuous use of many muscle groups to keep the player afloat builds strength as well. Increased arm and leg strength is a particular benefit of water polo; players are frequently throwing the ball throughout the game, and their legs are always in motion during play.

Maintain health and flexibility
Water polo also provides a great cardiovascular workout. In fact, players can burn up to 700 calories in one hour. The sport also increases the players’ flexibility; to perform well in the game, a great deal of agility is required.

Stay active at any age
The director of sport development for USA Water Polo, Mike Lewis, states that water polo training is less stressful on the joints and muscles of older people than the more high-impact, non-aquatic sports like jogging. It is important that that prospective water polo participants have an established sufficiency in swimming before they begin. Lewis also stresses the importance of creating a proper stretching routine, keeping up with fluid intake and having a cool-down period after participating.

Water polo’s popularity is on the increase in all age groups; individuals who played in college remain attracted to this sport because of its many health benefits. With the proper safeguards in place, water polo is a great exercise regimen for anyone.
